Abstract

Finta T. Arruan, Production biodegradable plastic using sago starch, Makassar. (Leader I : Ir. Zulmanwardi, M.Si and Leader II : Lasire, B.Sc)
Waste plastic may lead serious problem. Eventhugh plastic is freguently used in daily activities due ti its adaventage properties, such as the price to decrease, to be able easy and lasting, however it is difficult to decompose in lands. As a result it causes a serious environmental problem like flood. To overcome the negative impacts of plastic disposal, biodegradable plastic which by nature can be decompose, is being developed.
The purpose of this research is to produce biodegradable plastic using raw material of wet sago and dried sago powder. In this experiment, several parameters were examined such as heat resisitance, properties of film biodegradability to garbage soil and Bacillus cereus microorganism media, and its fleksibility against tensile test and elongation test luitually, sago stach powder was dluted into etanol and gliserol was added. The mixture was then heated poured onto a flat casting finally, the product was cooled for several days at room’s and pressure until the film was formed.
The result of this research is that plastic film from the raw material of dried sagu powder was formed faster than that wet sago film has capacity to withstand maximum temperature of 2300C while dried sao is only 2200C. the biodegradability test shows both films are quicker to decomposesed in the media of waste tofu water containing Bacillus cereus microorganism compared to that garbage soil. They are in range four to eleven days dand six to fifthin days respectively. Furthermore the properties of fleksibility carried out by tensile test shows that wet sago has tensile strength of 0,0954 N/m2. The elongation test shows that dried sago has tensile biger of 15,56%.
