Abstract

Rice branoil(RBO)extractionwithethanolusingmacerationmethodaccompaniedbystirring
has beenoptimizedusingresponsesurfacemethodology(RSM)basedoncentralcompositedesign(CCD).
Experiments wereconductedtoinvestigatetheinfluence ofextractiontime,ethanolconcentration,and
ethanol volumeontheoilyield, g-oryzanol, andvitaminEofRBOastheresponse.Theexperiment
consisted oftwentyunitsincludingsixreplicatesofthecenterpoints.ThedatawereanalyzedusingDesign-
Expert 10softwaretodevelopandevaluatemodelsandtoplottheresponsecurveas3Dsurfaces.Theresult
showed thatthemaximumoftheoilyield, g-oryzanol, andvitaminEofRBOwasachievedunderthe
optimum conditionsof x1 = 5.30h, x2 = 89.21%and x3 = 686.66mL(50gricebran),respectively.Maximum
of theresponseundertheseconditionswas14.47%,783.65mg.L�1, and127.01mg.L�1, respectively.This
study hasresultedinthedevelopmentofamodelforRBOextractionusingethanolassolvent,itisfeasibleto
be appliedtotheRBOindustrywithanefficient process,aswellasanimplementationofthe “green” solvent
concept.
