Abstract

Utilization of water sources is mainly used as a provider of electrical energy through hydropower and micro-hydro power
plants. One of the problems is how to utilize the water energy potential which is very lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine the power coefficient and Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) of the Savonius type vertical shaft turbine using 3 blades using flow direction guidance by varying the irrigation channel openings. Based on the test results in experiment 1 irrigation channel openings at a water speed of 0.21 m/s, the maximum output power of the turbine is 0.738 W, the power coefficient is 0.166 and the TSR is 2.071. For 2 openings of irrigation channels, the water velocity becomes 0.41 m/s which can produce a maximum output power of 0.939 W, a power coefficient of 0.026 and a TSR of 1.557.
