Abstract

An important consideration in sustainable production is the reduction of energy consumption. Machining is part and parcel in production and, thus, attempts on reducing energy used in machining will contribute in sustainable production. In order to target energy reduction in a machining process, it is prerequisite to be able to determine the total energy used during machining. This paper uses an approach of calculation of energy consumption in machining by summing up the energy consumed during setup operation, the energy during the cutting operation, the energy during tool change, and the energy to produce a cutting tool. A case study on machining of hardened stainless steel (43-45 HRC) in dry condition was given. The approach used was capable of calculating total amount of energy used in the particular machining process.
