Abstract

Globally, in the concrete industry, several billion tons of fresh water are annually used for mixing water, curing water and cleaning water. However, the utilization of seawater in the concrete industry is avoided, because the risk corrosion of reinforcement bars was induced by chloride in seawater compounds. In this study, concrete mixed with seawater will be developed to other durability aspects, such as carbonation and alkali-silica reaction (ASR). Strength development, carbonation-induced corrosion and concrete defect by ASR of seawater mixed concrete were investigated. The effects of seawater mixing, curing conditions, mineral admixtures and environmental exposure on strength development and these durability aspects were evaluated. Based on investigation result,it can be concluded that seawater may be used as mixing water for plain concrete and reinforced concrete from the viewpoint of strength development, carbonation resistance and ASR damage.
