Abstract

The energy crisis is a problem that is faced by every country, including Indonesia. The problem is caused by the increasing of human needs in using fuels while the supply of oil or gas are very limited and can not be renewed. One of the alternative energy resource which is currently developed is biogas (methane gas). It is produced from the process of degradation of organic material by microorganism in anaerobic condition. Organic waste such as fruit and vegetable waste has a high content of organic material that can be used as raw material production of methane gas. Pasar Terong is a traditional market which produces the large amounts of organic waste in Makassar, so taking advantage of the fruits and vegetables waste in Pasar Terong Makassar can overcome energy crisis and reduce environmental pollution. The aim of this research is to estimate methane production from fruits and vegetables waste of Pasar Terong Makassar. Based on this research, the estimation of methane production from fruits and vegetables waste of Pasar Terong Makassar is derived from biogas yield calculation based on analysis of carbohydrates content, protein, fat, total solid , volatile solid , and the ratio C/N of fruits and vegetables waste Pasar Terong Makassar. The results showed that fruits waste in Pasar Terong Makassar contain 78.51% carbohydrates content, protein 11.29 %, 3.02 % fat, 12.95% total solid, 92.81% volatile solid and 34.01 ratio C/N fruits mix. Vegetables waste in Pasar Terong Makassar contain 55.21 % carbohydrates content, 31.88 % protein, 4.56 % fat, 11,64% total solid, 91.71% volatile solid and 10.5 ratio C/N. The estimation of methane gas production from fruist waste of Pasar Terong can reach 1064.71 m3CH4 for 20.02 tons fruits waste in a month. The estimation of methane gas production from fruits waste of Pasar Terong can reach 941 m3CH4 for 18.35 tons fruits waste in a month. The estimation of methane gas production from combination of fruits and vegetables waste of Pasar Terong Makassar can reach 2005.71 m3CH4 for 38.37 tons of fruits and vegetables waste in a month.
