Abstract

This paper discusses case studies where modeling and simulation were used to evaluate and improve the manufacturing systems performance of PT Sermani Steel. Production quantities that can be produce achieve 10.716.000 kg per year. In order to able to fulfill requirement of market now, management should be able to improve capacities of minimum 15% from plant output. Height of idle time also influence capacities produce, in September 2006, uptime at galvanizing station reaches 94.53%. However, uptime used for the activity produces only about 79.45%. In order to understand proficiently of the real factory condition, Extend 4 using to modeled production process. Simulation is one of the most effective methods in the evaluating the capacity and equipment utilization, comparing the performance of alternative designs of manufacturing systems and provide appropriate recommendations leading to improved performance. The objective of this project was to simulate the production process and evaluate effectiveness of the process in terms of machine and system performance. Particularly, increasing throughput and optimize equipment utilization. Results from the current system identified galvanizing work area as the bottleneck resulting in high machine utilization but low production rate. Based on these results, optimum production capacity identified through use of scenarios by re-arrangement small corrugation machine, obtained production increase up to 0.05% (Scenario 5). By changing the number of hours worked per week (Scenario 4), obtained production increase up to 14.15%, by combined of Scenario 4 and Scenario 5 (Scenario 7) obtained production increase up to 17.44% and by adding the galvanizing line (Scenario 6) obtained production increase up to 44.32%.
