Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of changes in vacuum pressure and temprature on the vacuum drying process of wood, to changes in the physical properties of the porch and sapwood layers of kumea stone wood (manilkarra merrilliana, H.J.L). The method of achievement is to vary the vacuum pressure of 30 kPa, 65 kPa and 100 kPa, with variations in the temperature of the drying chamber 50oC, 65oC and 80oC. The dimensions of the wood are 25 cm x 2.5 cm x 1.0 cm, the two heaters as a convection heat source are installed at the bottom of the wood in the drying chamber. Tests carried out for 200 minutes and every 20 minutes measurements of mass, dimensions and measurements of cracks that occur. The results of the analysis showed that there was no change in physical properties in the form of cracks in the sapwood layer, for various variations of pressure and temperature of the vacuum drying. On the porch wood layer physical changes occur marked by the occurrence of cracks in the drying wood, except at a pressure of 30 kPa and a temperature of 50oC there is no cracking.
